Artist Statement

Formally educated and practicing in architecture, I have pursued a wide variety of artistic expressions. From architectural design to sculpture to surface pattern design, I am drawn to the exploration of the visual impact of patterns and how the mind perceives them. My preferred medium is freehand ink drawing, which comes from a lifelong passion for doodling that has evolved into a more focused study of rules-based line drawing. Many pieces are not consciously composed so much as they are the result of the application of rule systems which give rise to emergent visual effects. These effects evoke perceptions of three dimensional depth, complex layering and implied movement. It is the manipulation and evolution of this pattern logic which has been the catalyst for a large portion of my work.
